Light Turns Two Hundred
Two hundred years ago, in a quiet upper room in the Burgundy countryside, a man named Nicéphore Niépce pointed a camera obscura out of his window and waited. For roughly eight hours, sunlight etched the rooftops, the pear tree, and the far-off barn onto a pewter plate coated with bitumen of Judea. When he finally looked at the result, he was holding something no human had ever held before: a fragment of the world that had drawn itself. View from the Window at Le Gras is not beautiful in any conventional sense. It is grainy, ghostly, more suggestion than picture. And yet everything we love — every wedding portrait, every war photograph that changed a nation's conscience, every quiet snapshot of a grandmother's hands — descends from that stubborn, patient plate.
We rarely stop to marvel at how strange this all is. We carry cameras in our pockets and make more images in a single day than the entire nineteenth century produced in a decade. Photography has become so woven into the texture of ordinary life that we forget it was ever an invention at all — that someone had to dream it before anyone could do it.
The bicentenary is our chance to remember. Across 2026 and 2027, from the banks of the Saône where Niépce worked to museums in Tehran, Belgrade, Budapest, and Cincinnati, the world is pausing to honor the medium that taught us to see ourselves. What follows is our attempt to gather that global celebration into one place — an exhaustive, continent-by-continent guide to how humanity is marking the moment light learned to stay.

France: The Heartland of the Anniversary
In brief: As the birthplace of Niépce and Daguerre, France has mounted the most ambitious program on Earth — an official state-backed Bicentenaire de la Photographie stretching over thirteen months, with more than 180 labelled projects spanning the Louvre, the BnF, the Bourse de Commerce, and dozens of regional venues. If you visit only one country for the anniversary, this is the one.
France did not merely invent photography; it has decided to throw the medium a party worthy of its birth. The French Ministry of Culture's official framework, the Bicentenaire de la Photographie, runs from 1 September 2026 to 30 September 2027, reaching across metropolitan France, its overseas territories, and more than forty partner countries. As of mid-2025, roughly 180 to 182 projects had already received the official bicentenary label — a number that continued to grow as a second wave of applications closed in January 2026.
What makes the French program extraordinary is not just its scale but its ambition to look at photography from every possible angle: as art, as history, as science, as intimacy, as document. The Louvre places the medium in conversation with millennia of painting and sculpture; the BnF opens its vaults of Japanese and early French photography; the Bourse de Commerce assembles some seven hundred works. Below, we've laid out the Parisian flagship events first, then the treasures scattered across the rest of the country.
Paris & Île-de-France
The capital is the epicenter of the epicenter. Between the autumn of 2026 and the following spring, nearly every major Parisian institution turns its attention to the camera.

United Kingdom & Ireland: The Fox Talbot Inheritance
In brief: Britain — home of Henry Fox Talbot and the negative-positive process that shaped modern photography — greets the anniversary with a landmark Tate Modern survey of art photography's birth, a nationwide Heritage Open Days theme devoted to photographic heritage, and gallery shows tracing the medium from Niépce to now. Irish programming, however, remains quietly under the radar.
If France gave photography its first image, Britain gave it its future: Fox Talbot's calotype made the reproducible photograph possible, and much of what we understand as the photographic tradition flows from that breakthrough. It feels fitting, then, that the United Kingdom marks the bicentenary both in its grand institutions and in its villages, where Heritage Open Days will turn local history toward the camera.

A note on Ireland: our research turned up no photography events explicitly tied to the bicentenary. That absence may simply reflect the limits of what is documented online rather than a true silence — and it is exactly the kind of gap our readers can help us fill.
United States: Anniversaries in Competition
In brief: America's photography calendar in 2026 is crowded — but by a rival anniversary. The nation's 250th birthday (the Semiquincentennial) frames much of the year's programming, so photography's own bicentenary tends to hide inside broader shows. Still, the FotoFocus Biennial in Ohio — the largest photography event in the country — and two Fujikina festivals carry the 200-year banner proudly.
There is a poignant coincidence in the American calendar: in the same year photography turns 200, the United States turns 250. The louder anniversary tends to win the spotlight, and so many of the country's finest 2026 photography exhibitions are framed as reflections on the nation rather than on the medium. Canada: Two Coasts, Two Great Festivals

Canada's photographic culture runs from coast to coast, and in 2026 both edges of the country light up. Toronto's CONTACT, with more than 160 exhibitions, remains one of the largest photography festivals in the world, while Vancouver's Capture threads images through galleries, transit stations, and public walls. Europe is where photography grew up, and the continent's celebrations reflect a deep, almost familial pride. What's striking is how differently each country tells the story: Italy through a curated hundred images, Hungary through a sweeping partnership with the French Institute, the Nordic nations through a networked campaign that crosses borders as easily as light crosses a lens. The great auction houses — Sotheby's, Christie's, Phillips — have not, in what we've been able to find, announced explicitly bicentenary-themed sales. That may change as the anniversary reaches its peak, and it's another corner of the story we'd love to keep watching with your help.
The Map Is Not Yet Complete
Here is where honesty matters. This guide, for all its length, has holes — and we'd rather name them than pretend otherwise. In assembling it, we found little or no explicitly bicentenary-linked programming documented for large parts of the world: much of Asia (Japan, China, Korea, India, and Southeast Asia), all of Oceania, nearly all of Latin America, and most of sub-Saharan Africa. Several major institutions — MoMA and the Getty in the U.S., the V&A and the National Portrait Gallery in the U.K. — have splendid 2026 photography shows that simply aren't framed around the 200-year milestone.
Some of these silences are real. But many, we suspect, are merely gaps in what has been published online in the languages and places our research could reach. A festival in Lagos, a university show in Manila, a small-town archive in Chile opening its glass-plate negatives for the first time — these things may well be happening, unrecorded by the wider web. Photography's bicentenary is surely being marked in a thousand ways we haven't yet heard about.
Two Hundred Years On, the Shutter Is Still Open
When Niépce waited at his window, he could not have imagined any of this — not the festivals, not the museums, not the billions of us who now make pictures without a second thought. He was simply trying to hold onto the light a little longer. Two centuries later, that is still what photography is for: to hold onto the fleeting, to say this happened, this mattered, this was here. Every image in every exhibition on this page is a small act of that same defiance against forgetting.
The bicentenary is not really a celebration of cameras or chemistry. It's a celebration of attention — of the human impulse to look hard at the world and refuse to let it slip away unseen.
